Mosaics: 6/19/10-6/20/10, $300

Mosaics are an accessible medium that provide a creative and innovative way to personalize your home or offer your clients a unique and hand-crafted touch. This hands-on workshop will cover how to integrate artful mosaics to transform any space.  We will make magnificent mosaics using a variety of tiles as well as recycled and found materials.  The ideal is to transform trash into treasures so please bring any old ceramics, including dishes and pottery. Shiny objects work better than dull surfaces. We will be working on cement board and will learn how to cut and shape pieces as well as  the use of different cements and grouts. Bring descriptions of personal projects that you would like to use mosaics for and we'll explore the virtually limitless possibilities to personalize your space for example creating works of art to decorate a backsplash in your kitchen, an oasis in your bathroom, a floor anywhere indoors or out, or a unique piece of furniture for your home or garden.

Art of Stone: 7/11-7/16, $750

This five-day course will teach the art of building with natural stone and the intelligence and logic behind it. The goal is to build a series of sculptural elements culiminating in an arched entryway. Class discussions will include the science behind an arch and engineering the wooden form for its support while under construction. Taking things outside, we'll create the footings and talk about stone types and wall form and structure. The lay of the land and the interests of the class participants will define the design, including exactly what and where we will build. This course will take you beyond basic stone masonry and into the realm of stonework as an art form.

Heavyweight Boxmaking: 7/25- 7/30, $750

Wooden boxes offer practically infinite potential for personal expression--treasure troves, caches, reliquaries; even metaphors are all within the possibilities.  During this hands-on workshop, we'll explore a wide variety of techniques for making boxes including inlay, pattern routing, bent lamination, turning, and bandsawing using a number of different tools including the table saw, lathe, drill press, router, band saw, and belt sander.  We'll start with some simpler boxes — those made from hollowing the interior of a solid chunk of wood. Then we'll delve into the intricacies of boxes made by connecting pieces of wood together with actual joinery — dovetails, box joints, miters, and the like. Finally, we'll round out the week by looking at some of the finer points of boxmaking, such as installing hinges and other hardware, as well as finishing. Each workshop participant will have the opportunity to make at least five boxes and go home with a whole new arsenal of woodworking techniques.

All classes run on our campus in Warren, VT. Registration through www.yestermorrow.org or by calling 802.496.5545
